As luck would have it, we had 10 moms play our Chat to Win and 10 passes to give away, so, if you played, you won! I will private message you with more details about how to get into the conference on Wednesday.

=========================

Are you ready for some targeted, no-nonsense career advice? Then here's your chance to see Good Morning America contributor Tory Johnson in person when she holds her Career Expo right here in Atlanta next week. Tory, the CEO and Founder of Women for Hire, is all about empowering women in the workplace. Need a job? She's got advice on that too.  Plus, you can meet  with employers at the expo after the seminar.

Tory has given us 10 passes to give away for her early morning seminar from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Cobb Galleria on Wednesday, October 21.   Get more details on this event by clicking here.  If you are looking for a job or looking for direction in your career, this is the place to be.

We're going to award these passes randomly through our Chat to Win contest (click here for the official rules).  This is an open chat where we talk about issues facing us in the workplace or on the job hunt.  You can ask questions or make statements.  No one-word posts allowed and no back-to-back posts.  Remember, the more you chat, the better your chance at winning!  And, even if you've won a Chat to Win in the past month, you can still win these passes since this is a multiple-winner game.

This Chat to Win will end Saturday at 5 p.m.  Good luck!

I don't like how the job search process has become centered around the internet it is now so impersonal and seemingly impossible!

I have a question about putting volunteer work on my resume I am the head of two non-profit organizations -President and wondered if I should put them on my resume? I also wonder if that would be threatening to an employer seeing so much leadership positions.

I do agree that the internet is extremely impersonal

As I was updating my resume, I find it difficult to differentiate yourself based on a simple job description.  What is your advice for creating a resume that really makes you stand out?

Thanks.

I have only had one job out of college for a one of a kind non profit organization. I need to know how to make the skills acquired during my time there more marketable as they can be adapted to the needs of other fields.

I always wondered if you could email your resume to a potential employer using an attached cover letter or if it is still standard practice to use snail mail.  Or does your email serve as a cover letter.  Do you ladies know?

If I am responding to a posting that does not specifically requests a cover letter then I write a brief one in the body of the email. If they specifiy that a coverletter be submitted then I attach it as a word doc. I've notices some employers give both options for submitting a resume...hardcopy via mail or electronically.

I have always blindly sent my resumes with cover letters to companies that I have had a desire to work for, but I am wondering if it is "poltically correct" now to cold call on these companies and ask to set an appointment with the hiring authority rather than just mailing in a resume

I did a walk-in recently to hand deliver my resume and was advised by the receptionist that the hiring managers at her paticular company did not take cold calls or walking in very well. She advised me to stick to the internet and wait it out.
